History of Dimapur Municipal Council

The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), erstwhile known as Dimapur Town Committee was officially established on August 28, 1954, when Nagaland State was administratively under Assam State as Naga Hills District.

In 1950, a Regulation called The Assam Tribal Areas, Administration of Town Committee was passed and got assent of the then President of India. Under this Regulation, the Governor of Assam was authorized to constitute Town committees in specified areas wherein “He considered improved arrangements were necessary to deal with all the ‘matters of Towns and Tribal Areas”. However, the Governor did not constitute any Town Committee within the present Nagaland till 1954.

Initially, Dimapur Town had Panchayat System and Late Haji Muligul Khan was its President till 1945, then Haji himself handed over the charge of the Panchayat Presidentship to Late Baldev Ram and Late Sardar Gurmukh Singh was made the Secretary…
